Health Benefits
Matcha contains a concentrated amount of L-theanine - a unique amino acid found naturally in green tea. Because this amino acid promotes the alpha waves in the brain, it is reported to reduce stress and anxiety and help keep you calm and focused by heightening concentration and mental clarity. The caffeine in matcha releases slowly over 6-8 hours, therefor does not offer the caffeine jittery spike and crash you may experience when drinking coffee.
With virtually zero calories, this makes Matcha the ultimate "energy drink" without any of the side effects found in the highly sugared, overly-caffeinated beverages sold in stores today.
Matcha is the only green tea that is stone ground into fine, chalk-like powder. It takes approximately 1 hour to grind an ounce of matcha. When drinking matcha you are consuming the entire leaf; there is no straining of tea leaves ~ just add the powder to water and drink ~ so you receive 100% of the natural health benefits found in this tea.
Clinical Research
Clinical research on green tea has been going on for decades, and these studies are now beginning to show some remarkable potential health benefits. Matcha tea specifically is the subject of much research in Japan, but not so much in the United States due to its recent introduction. However, since the introduction of Matcha to the western medical community, curiosity surrounding this unique variety of green tea is beginning to attract a lot of attention.
One of the most recent published studies on Matcha came out of the University of Colorado that showed Matcha to contain 137 times more of the anti-cancer substance EGCG than regular China green tips or brewed green tea. In another British study, EGCG was found to be such a powerful anti-carcinogen that an entire new family of cancer-fighting drugs is being developed based on the EGCG molecule. The results of these ongoing studies are a solid testament to the potent health-giving properties of Matcha.
Matcha's History
It was in the 11th century that the Zen priest Esai initiated the cultivation of tea in Japan. His famous book about tea opens with the sentence: "Tea is the ultimate mental and medical remedy and has the ability to make one's life more full and complete." In saying that, Esai was referring to Matcha which was later to become Japan's most treasured kind of green tea and the only tea to be used in the traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony (Sado). Zen Buddhist Monks still prepare and drink Matcha before many hours of meditation.
Why Organic Matcha?
Because this is a highly concentrated form of tea, it is crucial to stick with an organic product. If there are any toxic chemicals in the soil or sprayed on the leaves during the growth cycle, those toxins will also be highly concentrated in your tea.
